Video footage appears to show the moment what was thought to be a blaze blaze started at the popular tourist attraction. Firefighters descended onto the scene shortly after 2pm after numerous people reported a ‘fire’ had broken out’ at the 360-degree viewing platform near the apex of the tower. A number of people were evacuated following the reports, according to a Blackpool Tower Spokesperson.
Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service confirmed that six fire engines as well as a drone team are in attendance at the site of the blaze.
At 4.30pm, however, police said what was captured in the video was ‘orange netting’.
Lancashire Police’s Divisional Commander Ch Supt Karen Edwards said what was seen was ‘orange netting’.
She said: “We are at the scene in support of Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service, Blackpool Council and Merlin Entertainment“
“The top of the tower is currently closed for renovation and difficult to access. Our helicopter has flown over the tower and there is no fire. We can confirm what can be seen is orange netting.”
“One man has been arrested on suspicion of Breach of the Peace and is being transported to custody”
Traffic problems around Blackpool have been reported, especially on the Promenade where the Tower is located. A Lancashire Fire and Rescue Spokesperson said: “We have 6 fire engines, the drone team and the rope rescue team currently in attendance at a fire on Promenade, Blackpool.
“Please stay away from the area. The drone team are in operation so please do not fly drones in the area as you may obstruct emergency operations.”
